Agarwal community in India is one of the largest and most critical Hindu cities living in India. Agarwal is a subcaste of Baniya caste, which initially belongs to the Vaishya Varna according to the Vedic Varna system. Vaishya is the people who were engaged in business during the Vedic Period. Even after thousands of years, Agarwal has protected their culture very well and still; they form one of the most significant business communities of India. Today the Agarwal community is spreading throughout the whole nation. And hence, we can also see a sudden rise in Agarwal Matrimony as well. 

But to know their roots, how their culture grew and formed, and how they became one of the most thriving business communities, we need to take a look at the history of the Agarwal community.

History of Agarwal community

 As mentioned earlier, Agarwal forms one of the most influential cities of Hindu religion, and the history of the Agarwal community can be known by their earliest recorded accounts which begins from the time of Mughal empire. Although many people believe that the history of Agarwal community in India is older than the Mughal Empire, the most transparent and written records of Agarwal community is found at the time of Mughal emperor Akbar(1542-1605). During these times, Agarwal entrepreneurs were moving out of their homeland of Haryana and Rajasthan, and adjoining regions, to different parts of Undivided India for setting up various businesses.

The first wave of migration took place during the Mughal period, and several Marwari Baniyas moved to the eastern parts of India, such as Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, and Jharkhand; and Bangladesh.

During the period of the Nawabs of Bengal, Agarwals have established themselves as a robust business community, and they controlled small banking structures and mints. They had to compete with the Chettiars who were located in these regions from long times when they arrived here.

Religious History of Agarwal Community. 

Although the written records of the history of the Agarwal community dates back to the period of the Mughal emperor Akbar the religious history of the Agarwal community is much older. Their existence and origin have been described in many older Hindu religious texts. According to the religious and mythological texts, the source of the Agarwal community traces its roots in Agroha, Haryana. 

People of The Agarwal community believe that they all are descendants of Maharaja Agrasen – The Messenger of Peace who is known as the founder of the whole Agarwal community. Well, the emperor Maharaja Agrasen was the son of King Ballabh of Pratapnagar. According to the current calendar, the birth of Maharaja Agrasen took place about 5000 years ago. Thus these shows that the history of the Agarwal community is older than 5000 years. King Ballabh was a Suryavamshi ( lineage from the Sun). He was the eldest son of the King Ballabh. According to the Mahalakshmi Vrath, at that age, it was the last stages of Dwapar Yug. Before the 51 years of war of Mahabharata, Agroha was established at that time. 

Maharaja Agrasen who is considered as the founder of the Agarwal community was not only a great King but was also a mighty warrior who can be concluded by the story of the war between Maharaja Agrasen and Lord Parshurama, the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Even after numerous invasions of India which resulted in a lot of cultural destruction, peoples of the Agarwal community were successful to protect their rich culture and heritage. Even today, Agrasen Jayanti or the birthday of Maharaja Agrasen is celebrated with joy and happiness.
